Naperville Asphalt Driveway repairs asphalt driveways for homes across Naperville. We fix the cracks, holes and sunken spots, and if the driveway needs more than a repair, we tell you.
What we repair
We clean out each crack and fill it so water can't get into it. If that's all your driveway needs, see our crack filling page.
For a pothole, we cut out the broken asphalt around the hole, firm up the stone under it and patch it with hot asphalt. Our pothole repair page has more on that.
Where a spot has sunk, often near the garage or the street, we dig out the soft patch, rebuild the stone under it and pave it again. Where the edges are crumbling, we cut back the loose asphalt along the side and pave a firm new edge.
Why we start with the water
The Federal Highway Administration says one way to keep water out of a pavement is to seal all its cracks. Another is to give the surface enough slope so rain runs off fast.
It also says cracks need sealing at the right intervals to stop surface water getting in. We look at how the water runs off your driveway when we fix it, and we tell you when the cracks will need sealing again.
When a repair is not enough
We patch a driveway when most of it is still sound. If the base under it has sunk or broken up across much of the driveway, a patch won't hold, so we suggest asphalt resurfacing or asphalt driveway replacement.
The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide says rebuilding an existing driveway needs a permit if any changes are made to it. If your job goes that far, we tell you before we start.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- Which cracks, holes and spots are in the price, marked on a sketch of the driveway.
- Whether holes are patched with hot asphalt or a cold patch from a bag.
- How deep each patch goes, and whether the stone under it is fixed too.
- Whether the work includes the part of the driveway by the street.
- How long you need to keep cars off the patches.
Questions about asphalt driveway repair in Naperville
Why does my driveway get potholes after winter?
The Federal Highway Administration says the ground under a pavement can freeze and then thaw, and the thaw can leave it much less able to carry weight. It says many potholes and other breakups in pavement come from this thaw weakening.
Can you repair a driveway in winter?
The Federal Highway Administration says pothole repairs made with hot asphalt need dry pavement, a high enough air temperature and no rain on the way. We book hot patches for days like that, and we tell you if a cold-weather fix will only last until spring.
Can you fix just the cracks?
Yes, we can fill the cracks on their own if the asphalt around them is still firm.
Who has to fix the part of the driveway by the street?
The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide says the owner of the home the driveway serves must keep the part outside the private property line in good repair, at the owner's cost. That includes the part that crosses the sidewalk, and we can repair it along with the rest.
Will the patches match the rest of the driveway?
We can't promise a patch will match the color of older asphalt, and we say so before we start. If you want an even look, we can do sealcoating afterward, which is a thin coat of sealer we spread over the whole driveway. The USGS describes sealcoat as the black liquid put on asphalt driveways to protect the asphalt and improve how it looks.
How soon can I park on a repaired driveway?
We tell you on the day how long to keep cars off each patch, since it depends on the weather and how deep the patch goes.
