Naperville Asphalt Driveway replaces old asphalt driveways for homes across Naperville. We take the old driveway out, fix or rebuild the base under it, and pave it again with new asphalt.
When replacing makes more sense than repairing
We suggest a full replacement when the base under the driveway has sunk or broken up. We won't lay a new top layer over a bad base, because the cracks come back in the same spots.
If the base is still sound, we'll say so, and asphalt driveway repair, crack filling or asphalt resurfacing may be all you need.
How we replace a driveway
The Federal Highway Administration says asphalt pavement is generally removed in one of two ways. Milling takes off the top surface with a milling machine. Full-depth removal means ripping and breaking up the whole pavement.
On a replacement, we take out the full depth of the old asphalt and haul it away. Then we dig out any soft spots, add new stone where the base needs it and pack it down hard before the new asphalt goes on.
We rebuild to the City of Naperville's Driveway Guide. It asks for 3 inches of asphalt on a 6 inch stone base in the right-of-way, the strip by the street. On your own property, it asks for 2 inches of asphalt on a 6 inch stone base.
Naperville permit rules for a replacement
The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide says rebuilding an existing driveway needs a permit if you're making any changes to it.
For new or expanded driveways, the city says the driveway must meet its zoning rules, and the changes must be drawn with measurements on a copy of the property's survey.
We check your plans against the city's rules before we quote, and we tell you up front who will apply for the permit.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- Whether tearing out and hauling away the old driveway is in the price.
- How deep the new stone base will be and how thick the asphalt will be, on both sides of the property line.
- Whether the driveway's size or shape will change.
- Who applies for the Naperville driveway permit.
- How long you need to keep cars off the new asphalt.
Questions about asphalt driveway replacement in Naperville
What happens to my old asphalt?
The Federal Highway Administration calls removed asphalt reclaimed asphalt pavement. It says most of it is recycled and used, and that it almost always goes back into roads in some form.
Can you make my driveway wider when you replace it?
Yes, we can, as long as it stays between 9 and 20 feet wide at the property line, which is Naperville's rule for home driveways. If you only want more width, see our driveway extensions page.
Can I keep my circular driveway?
The city's Driveway Guide says circular or horseshoe driveways that were there on or before October 2, 2007, may be kept up and replaced as they are. It says they can't be moved, expanded or made bigger in a way that breaks the city's parking rules.
Can I switch to a stamped or concrete apron?
The apron is what we call the end of the driveway where it meets the street. If yours will be brick pavers, stamped asphalt or stamped or colored concrete, the city wants a Right-of-Way Encroachment License Agreement sent in with the permit application. It also says concrete in the apron and the public sidewalk can only go in from April 15 through Nov. 15.
Will my new driveway drain better than the old one?
We set the slope so rain runs off toward the street or the yard, not toward your garage. The city's Driveway Guide says a paved driveway must be graded and drained so its runoff does not put an extra burden on the property next door.
Can you replace just part of the driveway?
Yes, we can replace one section, such as a broken end by the garage, if the rest is still sound. We'll tell you if the problem under it runs further.
Should I seal the new driveway?
We tell you when the new asphalt is ready for sealcoating, which is a thin coat of sealer we spread over the top to protect it, and we can come back to do it.
