Naperville Asphalt Driveway extends asphalt driveways for homes across Naperville. We add width, add length, or add a parking pad next to the drive, and we check the plan against the city's rules before we quote.
How wide your driveway can be
The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide says residential driveways can't be wider than 20 feet or narrower than 9 feet, measured at the property line.
Closer to the house, the guide lets a driveway widen bit by bit to reach a parking space, as long as it isn't wider than that parking space or the garage opening.
It says that extra width can carry on for 15 feet in the direction of the street. After that, the driveway has to narrow back to the most the city allows.
The guide says decorative edging, in a finish that clearly stands out from the driveway, doesn't count toward the width limits if it is no more than 3 feet wide. It also says parking on that edging is not allowed.
Adding a parking pad beside the driveway
The guide says a single-family house that stands on its own can have one extra parking space with no roof over it in the front yard. It says the space must be attached to the driveway and run alongside it, can't be bigger than a standard parking space, and can't sit within 5 feet of a side property line.
The guide's drawings show that one extra space as 9 feet by 18 feet. We mark out where the pad would go on your lot before we quote, so you can see it.
Permits for a driveway extension
The City of Naperville says new or expanded driveways must meet its zoning rules, and every change must be clearly drawn, with its sizes, on a copy of the legal plat of survey for the property. We help you mark the new width and length on that drawing of your lot.
How we join the new asphalt to the old
We cut a clean, straight edge on the old asphalt, so the new part has a firm edge to meet.
The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide sets a 6 inch stone base for asphalt driveways, with 2 inches of asphalt on your own property and 3 inches in the public right-of-way, the strip by the street. We build the new part to those numbers or thicker.
The guide says a paved driveway on private property must be graded and drained so it doesn't push more runoff water onto the property next door. We set the slope of the new part so the water runs away from your neighbor's yard.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The new width at the property line and at the widest point.
- Where any parking pad goes, and how big it is.
- How deep the stone base and the asphalt will be on the new part.
- Who applies for the Naperville driveway permit.
- How the new part will drain.
Questions about driveway extensions in Naperville
Can I add a second driveway?
The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide says a home gets one driveway for the first 75 feet of lot width along the street, and one more for each extra 75 feet or part of it. It says a corner lot may be allowed one driveway on each street.
Can you turn my driveway into a circle drive?
The guide says circular or horseshoe driveways are allowed only if the driveway can be laid out so a car can park behind the front yard, or on a corner lot, behind the side yard by the street. We check your lot against that before we draw one up.
Can you widen the end of the driveway by the street?
The examples in the City of Naperville's Driveway Guide show the driveway at the curb up to 4 feet wider than the rest of the drive, and no more than 24 feet wide there. The guide also says the owner must keep the part outside the private property line in good repair, at the owner's cost.
Will the new part match the old driveway?
We tell you before we start that new asphalt looks darker than old asphalt for a while, and we can come back later to spread a thin coat of sealer over the whole driveway, called sealcoating, so it looks the same.
Should I extend my old driveway or replace it?
We look at the old driveway first. If its base has sunk or broken up, we suggest asphalt driveway replacement, so the whole drive is new at once.
