Pothole repair at a house

Naperville Asphalt Driveway repairs potholes in asphalt driveways for homes across Naperville. We cut the broken asphalt out of each hole, firm up the stone under it and pack in new asphalt so the patch sits level with the rest of the driveway.

Why potholes open up after winter

The Federal Highway Administration says the ground under a pavement can freeze and then thaw, and the thaw can leave it much less able to carry weight. It says many potholes and other breakups in pavement come from this thaw weakening.

So we check the stone under each hole. If it has gone soft, we dig it out and put back firm stone before we patch.

Two ways to patch a pothole

The Federal Highway Administration describes a quick way to patch a pothole, called throw-and-roll. It says the crew fills the hole with patching material, then packs it down by driving over it.

It describes a slower way too. It says this one involves squaring up the edges of the pothole with a saw or other tools, putting in the repair material and packing it down with a small vibrating machine. It says the method works but takes a lot of labor.

We cut the edges square and pack each patch down with a vibrating plate on a driveway, so the new asphalt has firm, straight sides to hold against.

Why the patch material matters

The Federal Highway Administration says a highway research program found that the quality of the materials, more than the way the hole is patched, has the biggest effect on how good a pothole patch is. It also says that with quality materials, pothole patches can last several years, even though they are often meant as only a short-term fix.

We patch with hot asphalt whenever the weather lets us, and we tell you which material we're using before we start.

When patching is not enough

We patch potholes when the rest of the driveway is still sound. If holes keep opening across much of the driveway, a patch won't hold for long, and we'll suggest asphalt resurfacing or asphalt driveway replacement instead.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • Which holes are in the price, marked on a sketch of the driveway.
  • Whether each hole is patched with hot asphalt or a cold patch from a bag.
  • Whether the edges are cut square before the hole is filled.
  • Whether the stone under each hole is dug out and replaced.
  • How long you need to keep cars off the patches.

Questions about pothole repair in Naperville

Can you patch a pothole in winter?

The Federal Highway Administration says pothole repairs made with hot asphalt need dry pavement, a high enough air temperature and no rain on the way. In the cold months we can put in a cold patch to get you through, and we come back to do a hot patch once the weather turns.

Can I just fill a pothole with a bag of cold patch?

We'd only use a bagged cold patch to hold until a proper repair, and we tell you that if it's all the weather allows on the day.

How do I stop more potholes from forming?

The Federal Highway Administration says one way to keep water out of a pavement is to seal all its cracks, and another is to give the surface enough slope so rain runs off fast. We can fill the cracks around a patched hole on the same visit. See our crack filling page for more.

Who has to fix a pothole in the part of the driveway by the street?

The City of Naperville's Driveway Guide says the owner of the home the driveway serves must keep the part outside the private property line in good repair, at the owner's cost. We patch holes in that part along with the rest of the driveway.

Will the patch be the same color as my driveway?

We can't promise a new patch will match older asphalt, and we say so before we start. If you want the whole driveway to look the same, we can do sealcoating afterward, which is a thin coat of sealer we spread over all of it.

Can you fix just one pothole?

Yes, we can patch a single hole, and we'll point out any others we spot while we're there.
